Amateur Radio
has been around since the first discovery of radio in the last
century. Its early pioneers were responsible for many of the discoveries
and innovations that took place in those early days and many became
leaders in the professional world of broadcasting and communications.
They and their successors designed, built and maintained their own equipment.
After the Second World War large quantities of surplus wireless equipment became
available and this was eagerly snapped up by Amateurs and modified for their
own use. (It is interesting to note that much of the stalwart radio equipment
used in WWII was originally designed for pre-war amateur use in the first place!)
